Znanstival #15: Ljubljana’s Science Festival

The Science Festival in Ljubljana took place from 31 May to 2 June in 2024: it’s called Znanstival and is organised by the local science centre Hiša Experimentov (The House of Experiments).

Once the presenters had all ensured that their equipment was present and correct we had the opportunity to watch the “graduation” of the students of the Inspire course. In four days two teams had to think up and develop a science show. After a run out for the participants of Znanstival they were required to deliver to the general public.

After the “graduation” all the participants were whisked away on a mystery tour. We set out to the north and fetched up at Lake Bled. We were treated to wonderful hospitality, and then visited the castle overlooking the lake. Our tour guide was remarkable, both informative, and entertaining. We then circumnavigated the lake on the tourist train. It was a wonderful taste of a place well worth revisiting.

Friday saw Znanstival opened by Slovenia’s president, and the presentations start in earnest. My first presentation was on the Butchers’ Bridge, and it was nearly called off due to the inclement weather. I did manage to present, but both the audience and I nearly drowned! Later that day I had another opportunity. I spent the intervening time trying to dry out a little. At least in the evening the weather was dry, and the audience seemed to enjoy the presentation.

Saturday saw my final presentation, this time in the main square. There was a fine crowd, which the Hiša Song helped attract. Some of them even stayed for the presentation. For the rest of the day I did some busking and got catch up with old friends and make some new ones.

Unfortunately, I had to leave early, so I did not manage to see the end of the festival, or take part in the “Show it to the others” as I had a long-standing commitment for which I had to return. I hope I have an opportunity to take part next year, and that I am able to stay for the whole time. It only remains to be seen whether I will be allowed back!
