Norwich Science Festival 2025

Norwich Science Festival took place in and around the Forum, and other venues in Norwich starting the weekend before half-term week on Saturday 15 February. On the Thursday, physics at UEA was represented in the Forum with a table of demonstrations and hands-on exhibits. The vacuum cleaner powered marshmallow bazooka was the favourite, despite the occasional errant missile that ended up in the first-floor of the Library.
Having left the physics display in the capable hands of physics graduates and undergraduate students I slipped upstairs to run a chemistry workshop. The participants were challenged to identify the constituents of three white powders using the reactions they observe with a series of knowns. The participants were acting as forensic scientists who had been given a series of white powders seized in a “raid” on an “illegal laboratory”.
