UEA / INTO Roadshow – Indonesia
From Umjikelezo We-Science in South Africa I travelled to Jakarta via Singapore. This trip was sponsored by a partnership between INTO and UEA. I had a lovely time visiting cities all over Indonesia. I experienced the very slowest travel – stuck in traffic in Bandung to the very fastest, the high speed train there and back. We arrived at this particular school very early, so decided to travel back into town to get coffee before setting up. Needless to say, at this point, we were stuck in traffic, didn’t get the coffee, and had to turn back in order to be back at the school in time.
I get to work with a range of agents and colleagues on these trips. My reputation must have gone before me as I am always very well looked after. Every place we go there is usually a special restaurant, and I’m sure they think that I am looking thin because there is always plenty of delicious food to eat.
In addition to the colleagues I work with I get to meet all sorts of lovely people in the schools. Often the Principal makes time to greet me and offer refreshments. I would love to be able to have a longer relationship with many of the places I visit, but it is often simply not possible.
I was particularly glad to be able to arrange a show at the Australian International School in Jerudong. The reason is that I was invited there by a teacher who used to work in the UK, whom I worked with through the charity the Centre for the Advancement of Science and Technology Education (CAST Education).
My trip finished with a journey back to Johannesburg, as that was the most economical way to get back to the UK. On the other hand I was due out in Brunei (which is not that far from Jakarta) in a few days, but thereby hangs another tale, which is the subject of another post.
